Off-Premise Sales Continue Modest Gains, But $20+ Soars 18.5%

Wines selling for more than $20 per 750ml bottle soared 18.5 percent for the four-week period ending July 24 according to scanner data from The Nielsen Company. Overall sales were up 2.8 percent with U.S. wines gaining 4.1 percent and imports off slightly, down 0.6 percent.

PRICE SEGMENT GAINS OUTNUMBER LOSSES

While wine selling for more than $20 per bottle per bottle topped the charts, five of the seven price categories also posted gains.

Price gainers (by average bottle price) were:

  • $24.96, up 18.5%
  • $15.88, up 6.4%
  • $9.93, up 5.7%
  • $12.27, up 5.5%
  • $4.65, up 2.9%

Losing dollar volume were:

  • $2.20, down 2.1%
  • $6.79, down 3.2%

Rankings of price segment winners and losers is the same as last month as are most of the percentage gains.
