Napa Valley Think Tank Closes Its Doors

The Napa Valley Think Tank has closed its doors.

The laboratory opened in August, 2010 with the goal of providing more than strictly analytical services. According to its web site, its goal was “to be the focal point for area winemakers; the place they go for analytical laboratory services, winemaking supplies and advice, as well as to share ideas and knowledge about their craft.”

Wine Industry Insight confirmed the validity of an email sent to customers Friday just after noon from Managing Partner Andy Erickson. That email said, “It is with regret that I write to inform you that Think Tank will be ceasing operations as of today. The support we have received from the community is greatly appreciated, and we have enjoyed servicing you as customers. In the end, however, we are unable to sustain the business, and are closing our doors effective today. Thank you again for all of your support.”

A source familiar with ThinkTank’s services said, “Winemakers are very resistant to change, so not enough people switched. This even though NV Think Tank was very responsive, cost competitive and provided more accurate tests than many of the prominent labs. It shows that the wine industry won’t always beat a path to your door even if you have a better mousetrap.”
