Kieu Hoang: New Billionaire Winery Owner A Self-Made One-Man Conglomerate

Kieu Hoang and his namesake winery seem to have burst onto the wine scene from out of nowhere this year with a $240,000 winning bid on a Napa Valley Wine Auction lot on June 7.

He trumped that minutes later by making a $1 million donation to the Fund-a-Need effort. This is the final stage of the auction when bidders raise paddles to donate money with nothing more in return than their own warm fuzzies for helping the less fortunate.

Hoang’s donation was the largest of the auction, topping even the highest bid for an auction lot. That made a statement even louder than his announcement two days earlier that he had bought the Michael Mondavi family’s Carneros winery.

In September, he followed up with the acquisition of Guilliams Vineyards in St. Helena.
