Wineries and Distributors Dodge Copia’s Big Bankruptcy Bullet

At least 41 wineries and wine distributors — mostly from Napa Valley — are among the 374 unsecured creditors listed by Copia in its Dec. 1, Chapter 11 filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Santa Rosa, CA.

According to Copia’s filings, all the unsecured creditors combined are owed approximately $1.3 million. A list of the 20 largest unsecured claims shows a total of approximately $885,000. There are no wineries or wine distributors in that list. The smallest claim, from Express Personnel of Dallas, TX, is for $14,810.

This means that the remaining 354 unsecured creditors – including wineries and wine distributors (a list appears below) — are owed approximately $414,000.

In cases such as this where secured claims far exceed the company’s estimated assets, unsecured creditors can expect little or nothing from the Chapter 11 proceedings.

The complete list of creditors as filed with the bankruptcy court can be found here.

The 20 Largest Claims

According to Copia’s documents filed with the bankruptcy court, San Francisco law firm Winston & Strawn tops the list of the 20 largest claims with a total of $250,000 for professional services.
