The Feiring Line announces the winners of the Writing Mentorship Award

May 1, 2019 (New York, New York) Alice Feiring, founder of pioneering natural wine newsletter The Feiring Line, has announced the winners of the inaugural Writing Mentorship Award. Designed for the future wine writing star, the mentorship opportunity was granted to the best, never-before-published, non-fiction pieces that pinned wine in its cultural context.

The goal of the award is to illustrate the importance of wine writing in the world of culinary and beverage literature, to help foster greater narrative storytelling in wine writing and to give promising writers the mentorship they need,” Feiring said.

The winners are as follows:

Meg Bernhard won the top prize for her articulate piece “Making Wine With a Woman.”
James Sligh placed for his piece, “On Thunder Mountain, and True Names.”
Aimée Lasseigne New for her piece, “The Struggle for Sweet.”
Hannah Fuellenkemper for her piece, “The Tower.”

An esteemed and diverse panel of judges were on board to blind read the entries. These included novelist Amy Bloom, whose latest book is the acclaimed White Houses, Ray Isle, executive wine editor Food & Wine Magazine, Talia Baiocchi, editor-in-chief of PUNCH, Felicity Carter, editor-in-chief of Meininger’s Wine Business International, Christine Muhlke, contributing editor, Bon Appetit and founder of Bureau X, and Adam Sachs, former editor-in-chief of Saveur Magazine. What were they looking for? In Ms. Muhlke’s words, “I based the selections on writing, yes, but also on originality and the ability to bring wine to life in an exciting or unexpected way.”

All those who placed will receive mentorship sessions with judge Felicity Carter, and will be published in The Feiring Line. They will also receive special glassware from govino. The top entry will receive a cash prize of $500. In addition, all entrants will receive glassware from our sponsor, govino.
While there are many of programs within the culinary writing arena, similar opportunities for wine writing are lacking. The Feiring Line hopes this award will provide some steps towards fostering a correction.
