‘Poor man’s wine auction’ closed due to violation

The state Alcohol Beverage Commission has shut down one of the time-honored summer traditions of the Napa Valley, the Home Winemakers Classic, after deciding that the 30-year-old event breaks the law.

The Classic, the main fundraiser for the Dry Creek-Lokoya Volunteer Fire Department, has grown over the years to attract hundreds of locals as well as visitors,

Organizers of the Classic, scheduled to take place July 20 at Charles Krug Winery, learned earlier this week that the state would not issue a one-day permit for the fire department’s only fundraiser.

After exhausting all appeals to state officials, the organizers decided this week that the only recourse was to call it off and refund the tickets, according to Larry Russell, the chief of the volunteer fire department, who notified the Register about the cancellation.
